The City Revisited

Welcome to our blog. We’re two photographers based in the north-west of Ireland, specialising in rephotographing iconic scenes, using an old-style, large format camera.

In this unique project for the City of Culture/Portrait of a City, we re-visit the precise locations where images were photographed over 100 years ago. Derry/Londonderry has a rich photographic history from around the turn of the 20th century – a seminal time for both the medium and the city and we are lucky that several photographers were documenting what they saw so long ago. Once the exact location has been found, we re-photograph these images, using the same style of camera that was used originally (a large format, 5” x 4” camera).

The new and the original images are then merged to show the changes that have occurred over the past 100 years, in a unique, single image.

In the coming days, we’ll provide more details about our exciting commission, working in Derry~Londonderry for the Portrait of a City and City of Culture, rephotographing iconic images from the city.

We look forward to posting pictures of us out and about in the city with our camera, but in the meantime, if you spot us out with our heads under the hood, then come and say hello!

All the best,

Andy Horsman and Paul McGuckin
